London, Sept 11 (TNS): Former three-time Pakistan prime minister\u00a0Nawaz Sharif’s wife,\u00a0Kulsoom Nawaz, breathed her last at a\u00a0London\u00a0hospital on Tuesday. She was 68 years old.<\/p>\n

The health of Kulsoom, who was admitted at\u00a0London’s Harley Street Clinic for\u00a0cancer\u00a0treatment in June, deteriorated last night. She was placed on life support earlier in the day.<\/p>\n

Medics added that she had also developed a lung-related problem.<\/p>\n

In August 2017, it was confirmed that Kulsoom was suffering from lymphoma (throat)\u00a0cancer\u00a0and was shifted to\u00a0London\u00a0for further treatment.

On June 15, she was placed on a ventilator following a cardiac arrest.<\/p>\n

She served as Pakistan’s first lady for three non-consecutive terms from 1990-1993, 1997-1999 and 2013-2017, The Dawn reported.

Kulsoom is survived by her husband and four children – Maryam, Hassan, Hussain and Asma. Her husband and daughter are presently serving jail terms after being convicted for corruption.<\/p>\n

Begum Kulsoom contested and won NA-120, a traditional bastion of the Pakistan Muslim League \u2013 Nawaz (PML-N) after the seat fell vacant following Nawaz\u2019s disqualification\u00a0by the Supreme Court (SC) in the Panama Papers case.<\/p>\n

Crucial to the PML-N, Begum Kulsoom ensured the party remained functional during the most difficult of times. She contested for the NA-120 seat despite her failing health and\u00a0secured 59,413 votes and defeated\u00a0Yasmin Rashid\u00a0of\u00a0Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).<\/p>\n

During her husband\u2019s exile after the 1999\u00a0military coup, Begum Kulsoom took over reins of the party and served as its president from 1999 to 2002. Referring to her mother, Maryam Nawaz had said that she had dauntlessly challenged a usurper when \u201cmost men did not\u201d.<\/p>\n

Born into a Kashmiri family in Punjab, she graduated from\u00a0Forman Christian College University.<\/p>\n

All political leaders \u2013 opponents and otherwise \u2013 sent in their best wishes for Kulsoom during the length of her illness.\u00a0Both sons Hassan and Hussain reside in the UK and cared for her while Nawaz and Maryam attended near daily hearings of the corruption trial.<\/p>\n
