{"id":98326,"date":"2021-09-21T20:37:58","date_gmt":"2021-09-21T15:37:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tns.world\/?p=98326"},"modified":"2022-12-13T13:56:44","modified_gmt":"2022-12-13T08:56:44","slug":"fm-urges-west-to-eschew-tendency-to-mould-afghan-society","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tns.world\/?p=98326","title":{"rendered":"FM urges West to \u2018eschew tendency to mould Afghan society\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ISLAMABAD, Sep 21 (TNS): Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has urged the West \u201cto eschew the tendency to mould the Afghan society and body politic according to its own worldview\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe international community needs to realize that the new order of things in Afghanistan is not something that can be wished away or rendered insignificant through polemics and grandstanding,\u201d the foreign minister said in his Op-Ed posted at the CNN website.<\/p>\n<p>Qureshi said the tide of Afghanistan\u2019s history had shifted, however added that \u201cwe can usher in an era of stability in the region\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He said Pakistan was in favor of an inclusive approach respectful of the multi-ethnic character of Afghan society.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe challenge is to rise above the jostling of narratives to work for peace and stability in Afghanistan,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He stressed that no one wants to see the people of Afghanistan succeed more than Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs if stricken by the proverbial Cassandra\u2019s curse, Pakistan kept telling the arbiters of Afghanistan\u2019s destiny that the Afghan conundrum did not lend itself to a military solution,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said Pakistan kept on saying that it had nothing to gain from increasing Afghanistan\u2019s woes, only to be greeted by cynicism and occasional derision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut we persevered. Afghanistan is a brother and not a pawn on some chessboard of regional hegemonistic aspirations,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The foreign minister mentioned that Pakistan had suffered more than 80,000 casualties in its own war on terrorism in the last two decades, hosted more than four million refugees ungrudgingly.<\/p>\n<p>This incurred economic losses of over US $150 billion \u2014 a figure that makes the assistance received by Pakistan a pittance in comparison, he added.<\/p>\n<p>Qureshi said blame games and unrealistic expectations tested Pakistan, but it remained steadfast in its commitment to stabilization of Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p>He recalled that Pakistan\u2019s constructive role was instrumental in advancing the negotiations that evolved between the US and the Taliban, which concluded with a peace agreement, and the negotiations between the Taliban and the government of former President Ashraf Ghani held in Doha, Qatar.<\/p>\n<p>He said after August 15 when the Taliban entered the Afghan capital and seized the presidential palace, Pakistan proved its sincerity by keeping its embassy in Kabul open.<\/p>\n<p>Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) helped evacuate functionaries of diplomatic missions, international organizations, NGOs and media entities, he added.<\/p>\n<p>Qureshi quoted Prime Minister Imran Khan as saying that \u201cPakistan means well. Work with us to heal the wounds of Afghanistan.
