SRINAGAR Oct 8 (TNS): Expressing grief and concern over the loss of lives in Anantnag, Tral and Bijbahara during past few days, Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani said, “Killing human beings for political differences is sheer violation of human and moral values.”
“It is sad and it should never happen,” he said.
Appealing to the people to maintain discipline and avoid confusion and disorder, Geelani, in a statement said, “During the campaign against braid cutters we should not take any step which may provoke the state forces to resort to retribution.”
Reiterating TRC Chalo call on October 14, Geelani appealed to the people to make the event a big success.
Geelani, while lashing out at Tihar jail authorities for their “inhuman” behaviour against those arrested by the NIA, warned “if anything untoward happens to them, the local rulers shall have to face consequences”.
Geelani also condemned “the fresh arrest spree”, “harassment of political leaders” and “humiliation to their family members” during night raids. “In the wake of call by Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) for peaceful protests, the police arrested Hakim Abdul Rashid and Muhammad Ashraf Laya. Police also raided residences of several leaders,” Geelani said.
He, according to the statement said, “police raided the house of Hurriyat spokesperson Ghulam Ahmad Gulzar at Gulshan Abad, Hyderpora, here and harassed inmates. They again raided the house in the wee hours and harassed the family knowing that no male member was present there.”
Geelani, meanwhile, has expressed deep sorrow over the demise of educationist, Ateeqa Ji, saying “during her tenure she contributed her highest, and rendered meritorious services in the field of education and for Urdu literature.”
