KARACHI Sept 25 (TNS): Mayor Karachi Wasim Akhtar said: “We want to work together with Sindh Government and it was the duty of the Chief Minister Sindh to sit with us for solving city problems.
“Presently topmost issue in Karachi relates to sewerage system for which KWSB officials will be contacted.
“People should know how much money was received for such works. Funds amounting to Rs14 billion rupees and not 8billion were released in 2016-17 but these were handed over to the former administrator and also included payment for salaries, pensions of staff and non-development expenditure whereas 4billion rupees were earmarked for development works.
“The schemes which were made by former administrators are now being completed by us and the current year budget was also prepared by us in which citizen’s schemes have also been incorporated and their priorities were taken into account. Development works will continue despite limited resources.”
He expressed these views on a visit of district central along with MQM Pakistan Chief Dr. Farooq Sattar to check and review the road carpeting and other uplift works in Hussainabad area.
MPA Mehfooz Yar Khan, DMC Central Chairman Rehan Hashmi, Works Committee Chairman Hassan Naqvi, Chairman UC32,33,34 and D.G Works Shahab Anwer were also present on this occasion.
Dr. Farooq Sattar while talking to media representatives on this occasion said the media should not entertain such baseless reports and there was no truth in these reports that the Mayor, Deputy Mayor Karachi or District Chairmen are being removed from their posts.
He said despite having no resources or powers and without any support from the Sindh Government, Mayor, Deputy Mayor and District Chairmen in Karachi have continued the public welfare works with the cooperation of the people. He said we have a mechanism of reviewing the performance on every six months or a year and this is being done now to work out the strategy for future.
Dr. Farooq Sattar said we have advised the elected local government representatives to make the sanitation system effective by utilizing the available resources. Our priority number one is lifting of garbage and then supply of water and improvement in the drainage system and road infrastructure.
He said the control of solid waste management board and water board has been with the Sindh Government but still we would remove as more garbage as we could from the city we are speeding up the uplift works and focusing on basic issues.
Dr. Farooq Sattar and Mayor Karachi also met with the people during this visit and also drove the roller used in the road carpeting works.
