NAB moves SC over Dr Asim’s bail issue

Islamabad June 10 (TNS): The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has filed an application in the Supreme Court opposition the bail of Dr Asim Hussain. Dr Asim has also pleaded to take off his name from the exit control list to allow him to go abroad for treatment.

The anti-graft body said in the application that Dr Asim was facing an inquiry in financial scams and he could not be allowed to go abroad on medical grounds before he clears his name in the financial scandals. The NAB said that Dr Asim could not be given bail and his bail should be done away with.

The NAB said that Dr Asim did not deserve bail as he has been indicted by an accountability court.

On October 29, 2016, an accountability court in Karachi indicted Dr Asim, former petroleum secretary Ejaz Chaudhry and others in an over Rs460 billion corruption reference.

Dr Asim, a close aide to former president Asif Ali Zardari, along with his accomplices, faces charges of misusing his authority for getting plots allotted fraudulently and encroaching upon state land for expansion of Dr Ziauddin Hospital/Trust, money laundering, illegal gains, kickbacks, commission through fertiliser cartel for illegal curtailment of gas for exploitative price hike and defrauding people in the name of charity hospital.

Meanwhile, the accountability court in Karachi on Saturday dismissed three applications of Dr Asim, who had sought queshment of the corruption reference against him.
