ISLAMABAD, Aug 9 (TNS): Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif left Punjab House in Islamabad a little after 11am, embarking on his journey back to hometown, Lahore, via Grand Trunk Road.

Nawaz held a meeting with top party officials, including Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, and Abid Sher Ali, before his departure from his camp office. Nawaz left from the back gate of the Punjab House, disappointing some of his supporters who had gathered to see him off.

He is not in the bulletproof container, as earlier expected. Nawaz’s motorcade moved onto Jinnah Avenue from D-Chowk, where he was expected to address his supporters who have gathered from Peshawar, Abbottabad, and the outer areas of Islamabad. The procession is moving at a slow place. Tight security preparations have been made along GT road, with the deployment of plain-clothed policemen as well as elite force commandos.

Numerous PML-N MNAs have been instructed to remain at their constituencies and stations, and to bring supporters to greet the rally from there. A mobile health unit has been prepped for the Lahore rally, which includes a team of doctors who will stay provide medical services to the participants, if needed. Efforts are being made to make sure that no vehicle, which isn’t participating in the rally, is allowed close to the convoy.

At least 5,000 people are expected to accompany the former premier throughout the journey, whereas thousands are expected to receive and see off their leader at the borders of their respective constituencies.
