Astana June 09 (TNS): Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday held a meeting with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and UN Secretary General António Guterres ahead of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit scheduled for today at the presidential palace in Kazakhstan capital Astana.
PM Nawaz and President Ghani held the hour-long meeting at Ramada Hotel, where both are staying. PM’s Adviser on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz was also present.
Issues related to terrorism, border fencing and regional security came under discussion during the meeting.
Earlier on Friday, Nawaz held a meeting with the UN Secretary-General Guterres.
During the 45-minute-long, issues related to Pakistan’s role in the war on terror and the recent crisis in the Gulf region came under discussion. The UN chief congratulated Pakistan for its likely inclusion into the bloc as a permanent member.
Pakistan and India will become permanent members of the SCO after the summit ends.
With the inclusion of Pakistan and India, the SCO will have eight states as permanent members including China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
The prime minister also reportedly exchanged pleasantries with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
