PTI leader not allowed meeting Dasti in jail

Multan June 10 (TNS): Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Vice-Chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi while condemning the arrest of MNA Jamshed Dasti has demanded that National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq issue the production order of the arrested lawmaker.

Talking to the media in Multan after he was stopped from meeting Dasti in Multan Jail, he said that Dasti is an elected member and he has been subjected to political victimisation over his criticism of the government. “The speaker has assured us that if an application was submitted to him, he will issue the production order so that he can participate in the budget proceedings,” the PTI leader said.

Qureshi said that the jail authorities informed him that he cannot meet DastI without a nod from high-ups in Lahore. He said he wanted to get an application signed by Jamshed Dasti requesting the National Assembly speaker to issue his production order.

He said since Dasti was staying in jail in his constituency it was his moral duty to meet him but the authorities refused him to see the jailed parliamentarian. He said had even requested that he would sit at the gate and someone from jail get the application signed from Dasti but to no avail.

Qureshi said the government that had distributed sweets on the verdict of the Supreme Court but now it was trying to make the JIT controversial.

Meanwhile, veteran politician Javed Hashmi, who met Dasti in the jail, said that the jail authorities did not stop him from meeting the lawmaker. He, however, warned the prime minister and the Punjab chief minister against resorting to political victimization of opponents as it not bode well for the duo.

Qureshi said that the PML-N government was trying to make the Joint Investigation Team controversial by attacking it from all fronts. “The attack on the JIT is tantamount to attacking the judiciary and the PTI stands by the institutions,” he said.

He said that the PML-N leadership staged an attack on Sheikh Rashid Ahmed and when Dasti condemned the episode, a treasury minister had threatened him with dire consequences. “It was Dasti’s democratic right to condemn the attack on Sheikh Rashid, but he has been punished by insinuating concocted cases against him,” Qureshi said.

Qureshi also said that unless Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was in power, a fair and transparent investigation into the Panama Papers case was impossible and the premier should step down to pave the way for a fair investigation.

Meanwhile, Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Khurshid Shah has written a letter to the NA speaker to allow Dasti to participate in the budget session of the lower house. Shah said that the incarceration of the opposition lawmaker was illegal and violative of parliament’s sanctity.
