Roma do the Impossible, as Liverpool reach first UCL semis in a decade


Rome/Manchester, April 11 (TNS): Italian side AS Roma produced a miracle against 5 time European champions Barcelona on Wednesday in Rome as they overcame a 3 goal deficit of 4-1 in the second-leg of Champions League Quarter Finals. Liverpool also reached their first semifinal berth in the UEFA Champions League in a decade by beating premier league leader Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
AS Roma who sit 4th in the Italian League ;(Serie A) produced one of the greatest comebacks in UCL history after defeating Barcelona by 3-0. A tie in which they had been written off by many Football Pundits.
Roma striker Edin Dzeko broke the deadlock early in the game to give his side some hope of making a comeback in the tie. The same man who gave them a crucial away goal in the 1st leg.
A controversial decision by the Referee gave AS Roma a lifeline in the game and Daniel De Rossi slotted it home to make it 2-0.
Defender Kostas Manolas sent the crowd into ecstasy as he scored the equaliser of the tie to make it 4-4 on Aggregate, Roma had accomplished the “Mission Impossible”.
Elswhere, Liverpool was in search of their first semifinal in the Champions League for a decade and they achieved it in style beating City in their own backyard by 2-1.
City got an early lead in the game courtesy Gabriel Jesus but could not break Liverpool’s resilient defence after that, Liverpool slowly got back into the game as soon as they got hold in the midfield.
In the second half Salah scored the decisive away goal to make the tie “Done and Dusted” and Firmino provided the Icing on the cake by giving the Reds a lead at the Etihad.
The game had two significant moments; a Leroy Sane offside and city manager’s argument to the referee on the decision which subsequently banished him from the touchline to the stands. Sane’s offside decision remains controversial and debatable and certainly turned out to be the turning point of the game.
Real Madrid will host Juventus in the second leg of the Quarter Final with a 3-0 lead in the bag, whereas German side Bayern Munich will face Spanish outfit Sevilla at the Allianz Arena with a 2-1 lead in the first leg.
