Islamabad June 1 (TNS): Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar has summoned PML-N leader and Senator Nehal Hashmi over his fiery speech in which he could be heard threatening investigators for grilling the prime minister’s son, Hussain Nawaz.
Nehal Hashmi, whose basic membership of the party was suspended by the prime minister after the speech went viral on the social media and relayed by electronic media, will appear before the court at 1 pm today to clarify his position.
Nehal Hashmi has also been asked by the prime minister to tender resignation from the Senator slot as its member.
On Wednesday, the prime minister had summoned Hashmi to the Prime Minister’s Office, where he was also asked to step down from Senate as a member. According to reports, Nehal Hashmi could not meet the prime minister in person, however, PML-N spokesperson Asif Kirmani reportedly conveyed the prime minister’s message to him, asking him to immediately resign from senatorship.
Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb confirmed that the basic membership of Nehal Hashmi has been suspended and a show cause notice has also been served on him. According to Marriyum, the prime minister has demanded from Nehal Hashmi to also resign from the Senate slot as his statement has put the ruling party and the Sharif family in an awkward position when the Joint Investigation Team was carrying out an investigation against the first family over the money trail that led to the purchase of properties abroad.
Earlier, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, the government and the prime minister have disclaimed the controversial speech of senior party leader and Senator Nihal Hashmi that went viral on Wednesday.
PTI chief Imran Khan while reacting to Nehal Hashmi’s speech said that it is the modus operandi of the PML-N that it either buys loyalties of the people or resorts to intimidation.
In a flurry of tweets, Imran said: “This PML-N culture of buy or intimidate continues today & Nehal Hashmi reflecting this in his condemnable threats.”
Yet in another tweet, he said: “Nehal Hashmi’s shameful threats to superior judiciary & JIT part of PMLN pol (political) culture. They either buy ppl (people) or try to scare them”
Opposition Leader in National Assembly Khurshid Shah while talking to reporters outside the Parliament said that the whole PML-N leadership was behind the speech of Nihal Hashmi as according to him the whole party harbours the same thinking about state institutions and personalities who come in their way.
“Nihal Hashmi is a tiny element in the party. He is has a minuscule role in the party but it is the whole party and the leadership that speaks from behind.”
Shah said that they will put exert maximum pressure that Hashmi is thrown out of Senate by taking resignation from him.
In the video that has gone viral on the social media, Nehal Hashmi could be seen indirectly threatening the judges and JIT members probing the Panama Papers of dire consequences once they retire from service.
“You are holding the son of the Nawaz Sharif accountable. We will teach you a lesson and lay siege to you once you retire and make you and your children an example for others,” Hashmi could be heard as saying while addressing a party function in Karachi marking Yaum-e-Takbeer. “Whosoever is taking accountability from us, will be held accountable,” Hashmi says in the video in an apparent reference to the judges and JIT members, who have been investigating the Sharif family. “Whosoever is conducting an investigation, listen, we never forgive, and take avenge of the excesses meted out to us.”
