Islamabad, July 2 (TNS): Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s cousin, Tariq Shafi, on Sunday appeared before Joint Investigation Team (JIT) probing offshore assets of ruling Sharif family.
The powerful six-member of JIT tasked with probing the business dealings of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his sons abroad is entering a crucial stage, with the investigation heading towards conclusion.
The premier’s cousin was driven to Judicial Academy, JIT secretariat, non-other than but by State Water and Power Minister Abid Sher Ali.
Local media reports said that Shafi was questioned regarding the Hudaibiya Paper Mills Limited during Sunday appearance,
Tariq Shafi was re-examined over his statements recorded during his earlier appearance before the body, reports added. .
The premier’s cousin had been questioned by the JIT on May 15 for around 12 hours.
During the hearing of the Panama Papers case, Shafi submitted two affidavits in the Supreme Court — dated Nov 12, 2016 and Jan 20, 2017 — confirming receipt of 12 million Dirhams as sale proceeds of the remaining shares of Mian Sharif’s factory in Dubai and delivery of the said amount in cash in installments to Fahad Bin Jassim of Qatar (elder brother of Hamad Bin Jassim).
This money later became the source of funds for acquisition of the four Park Lane properties in London, the Supreme Court was told earlier this year.
After his appearance before the JIT in May, Shafi alleged that he was mistreated and threatened by certain JIT members.
Hassan Nawaz and Maryam Nawaz will appear before the body on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively, in what officials said will be the concluding week of the JIT tasked with collecting evidence within two months.
