Two-day workshop on RIRS & HOLEP held at Shaikh Zayed Hospital Lahore

LAHORE Jan 08 (TNS): Two-day workshop on RIRS (Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery) and HoLEP (Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate) was conducted at Shaikh Zayed Hospital Lahore under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Hafiz Shahzad Ashraf, Head Department of Urology.

Dr. Aasem Masood Chauhdary, renowned Urologist from UK, practically demonstrated RIRS for renal stone and HoLEP for prostate disease for the first time in Punjab. Surgeons, Doctors, Nurses and Paramedical Staff also participated in the workshop.

Prof. Hafiz Shahzad Ashraf said that HoLEP is a modern alternative of TURP, in which prostate gland is removed with help of laser. This procedure is performed on prostate gland of more than 60 grams. This is the only treatment option for Benign Prostate disease in those patients who cannot quit blood thinner drugs like Aspirin, Clopidogrel and Warfarin. Usually prostate glands of more than 100 grams are operated by open technique but with the help of HoLEP these larger prostate can be operated without giving any incisions. The patients who undergo HoLEP bleed less, recover early as compared to those who underwent TURP.

Prof. Hafiz Shahzad Ashraf further pointed that RIRS is modern surgical procedure to remove Kidney Stones with the help of Laser without incision. During this procedure flexible Ureteroscope is passed through Urethra, Bladder and Ureter to reach inside the kidney. This procedure is performed under General or Spinal Anesthesia. Patients of kidney stones operated by RIRS feel no pain and recover earlier as compared to those treated by Lithotripsy and PCNL.

Prof. Dr. Farid Ahmad Khan Chairman & Dean Shaikh Zayed Medical Complex Lahore while appreciating the start of these newer modalities said that the department of Urology Shaikh Zayed Hospital is the busiest department of Punjab which is providing daily indoor, outdoor and operation theatre facilities to the patients coming across the country.

He pointed out that now the people of Pakistan will also be able to benefit from these newer modern ways of treatment. Patients suffering from kidney stones and Benign Prostate disease will be treated by RIRS and HoLEP along with ESWL, PCNL and TURP and they will not have to travel abroad for such procedures, he added.
