Lahore, August 28 (TNS): In another ground-breaking move, Shahbaz Sharif led Punjab government launched a programme to monitor the soil health of every farm in the province by issuing farmers personalised soil health card.

Five-year programme was launched last year; the initiative is keeping in view the overexploitation of soil.

The initiative provides information on soil deficiencies and amount and kind of fertilizer needed to get better crops.

The project is started with sum of Rs. 4.176 billion and 560,000 samples were collected during first year covering 20% area of Punjab.

Under the project, Punjab would able to produce 1.285 million tonnes additional wheat as by soil testing farmers get 120-360 kg per acre more wheat with no extra costs.

Small farmers with 10 acres of land can be benefited by the project.

Punjab agriculture department said 32 districts have been given its mobile laboratory to collect soil samples from every farm and issue farmers soil health card.

Each lab can test 22,000 soil samples a year while the data collected by the project would be available online through a Geographic Information System.

Under the scheme the government plans to issue Soil card to farmers which will carry crop-wise recommendations of nutrients and fertilizers required for the individual farms to help farmers to improve productivity through judicious use of inputs.

All soil samples are be tested in various soil testing labs across the province. Thereafter the experts will analyze the strength and weaknesses (micro-nutrients deficiency) of the soil and suggest measures to deal with it.
