New electoral rolls review process to be completed by April 30: ECP

ISLAMABAD, Oct 27 (TNS): Secretary Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Babar Yaqoob on Friday said that the process of review of new electoral rolls will be completed by April 30.

Talking to media, the Secretary ECP said that the commission has given seven days’ time to the departments concerned to complete their work so that ECP may fulfill its constitutional responsibilities.

He made it clear that the commission will not be responsible in any delay from the departments concerned. He said that the Secretary Law and Secretary Statistics Division have assured their support to the ECP.

He said that the commission will start its work after notification of national census-2017 results. He urged for early notification of national census-2017 results.

He said that after national census-2017, an addition of 23,000 blocks and 527 circles has been reported. He said that ECP was ready for delimitations under new law but it depends on sharing of national census-2017 results. He said that the ECP has already started training of its officers across the country on delimitation.

Earlier, an emergency meeting was held here under the chairmanship of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Justice Sardar Muhammad Raza to discuss the matter of publication of results of national census -2017, review on new electoral rolls and required time and problems for the commission in new delimitations.

Secretary Law and Justice assured the commission that all important constitutional and legal amendments will be completed as soon as possible so that ECP could complete its work. Secretary Statistics Division also assured the commission to provide urgent mapping details. The commission expressed its concerns over delay in publishing of results and providing other relevant details of national census-2017. The meeting was informed that it will be not possible for ECP to complete its work on review on new electoral rolls and new delimitations in case of delay in necessary constitutional amendments, publishing of results and providing other relevant details of national census -2017 including published report of census results, mapping with statistical charges, circles, blocks and boundaries.

The meeting said that the departments concerned will be responsible in this regard and that the commission has several time drawn attentions of these departments.
