Sharjah, Nov. 1 (TNS): The White Ferns have opened their one day international series against Pakistan with a thrilling eight-run win in Sharjah, the islander media reported on Wednesday.

A century by opener Sophie Devine anchored New Zealand’s 240-9, but the drama was reserved for the final ten overs of Pakistan’s run chase, which ultimately fell short.

Pakistan were on track for a comfortable victory as they entered the final 10 overs requiring just 56 runs with six wickets still in hand.

However, the White Ferns were able to hold their nerve to claim the final five wickets for just 15 runs, ending Pakistan’s chase with midway through the penultimate over.

The dramatic finish saw two Pakistani players run out, while Amelia Kerr (2-36), Holly Huddleston (2-32) and off-spinner Leigh Kasperek (2-35) all made helpful contributions with the ball, giving New Zealand the perfect start to the three-game series.

Devine was the top scorer for the White Ferns, finishing with 103 off 119 balls – just her second ODI century.
