Karachi, Nov. 21 (TNS): Amid citizens of the province suffering from starvation, poverty and ailment, authorities in Sindh have decided to issue national identity cards to livestock to take animal welfare to another level.

Local media quoting officials said that an institution similar to the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) will be established for issuance of identity cards, visa and passport to cattle.

In a first, the Government of Sindh’s livestock department has prepared a bill to form a livestock registration authority.

A computerised database will be created and livestock owners shall have to inform the authority their animals’ birth, death, as well as movement, and acquire the relevant documents.

According to the report, every animal will be granted a specific identification code, and the livestock authority will work on the nutrition and welfare of cattle, whereas butchers will also be trained and registered.

Such cards have also been issued to cows and buffaloes in India. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has initiated a plan to assign unique 12-digit identification numbers to 88 million cattle in India by the end of 2017.
