THATTA Dec 04 (TNS): U.S. Consul General Grace Shelton visited the historic Makli Hill graveyard to participate in the completion ceremony for the Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP) project at the tombs of Sultan Ibrahim and Amir Sultan Muhammad in Thatta, Sindh.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) named Makli Hill a World Heritage site in 1981. The site includes the tombs of kings, queens, governors, saints, scholars, and philosophers from the 14th to 18th century. The United States has provided more than $260,000 to restore the ancient tombs of Sultan Ibrahim and Amir Sultan Muhammad.
“The Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation is a centerpiece of America’s partnership with Pakistan in the area of art and culture,” said Consul General Shelton, adding, “Both the United States and Pakistan recognize these sites are essential reminders of the contributions and historical experiences of humanity, and that through conservation efforts like this, we preserve these cultural treasures and the stories they tell for future generations.”
The U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP) supports preservation of cultural sites, cultural objects, and forms of traditional cultural expression in more than 100 countries around the world.
