ISLAMABAD, Dec 07 (TNS): Pakistan on Wednesday joined the international community in expressing its strong opposition and condemnation on the decision of the US Administration to recognize the occupied city of Al Quds Al /Jerusalem as the so-called capital of Israel and the plan to relocate its embassy there.

“It is deeply regrettable that pleas from States across the globe not to alter the legal and historical status of Al-Quds have been ignored, more out of choice than necessity,” a statement issued by the Prime Minister Office here said.

This decision represents a serious violation of international law and applicable UN Security Council resolutions, more specifically UNSCR 478. It is a serious setback to the rule of law and international norms. It signals a severe blow to the Middle East peace process as well.

Pakistan shares the international outrage and is deeply concerned over the implications of this decision for international peace and security, especially in the Middle East, the statement said and added that Pakistan called upon the UN Security Council to take cognizance of this situation and take steps in accordance with the UN Charter.

Earlier PM Office had called upon the United States to refrain from such move that alters the legal and historical status as well as character of Al-Quds.

A statement issued by the Prime Minister’s office on Wednesday had said that Pakistan unequivocally opposes the reported plan of shifting of the US embassy to Al-Quds Al Sharif. It said that Pakistan fully endorses the recently adopted final communique of the OIC on this issue.

The statement cautioned that shifting of the US embassy would constitute a clear violation of international law and the UN Security resolutions particularly its resolution 478 of 1980.

It would also side step decades of global consensus on this issue, undermine regional peace and security as well as derail any prospects for a lasting peace in the Middle East. It said the US should fully comply with all the applicable UN Security Council resolutions on the matter. The statement said

Reaffirming full solidarity with the Palestinian people, the statement renewed Pakistan’s call for establishment of a viable, independent and contiguous State of Palestine on the basis of internationally agreed parameters, the pre-1967 borders and with Al-Quds as its capital.

Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif said that the move would alter the status of Jerusalem and would bury the two states solution.

Foreign Office, following Trump’s decision of moving the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, also reacted quickly and termed the move as illegal.

In a press release, the Foreign Office said, “The step would constitute a clear violation of international law and UN Security Council resolutions particularly UNSCR 478 of 1980 and it would also sidestep decades of global consensus on this issue, undermine regional peace and security as well as derail any prospects for a lasting peace in the Middle East”.

The Foreign Office also said that it fully “endorses the recently adopted Final Communique of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on this issue”.

“Pakistan calls upon the United States to refrain from any move that alters the legal and historical status as well as the character of Al-Quds Al-Sharif, fully comply with all applicable UN Security Council resolutions including UNSCR 478,” the press release said.

Pakistan urged the United Sates to revisit its decision as soon as possible in order to avoid the potentially grave repercussions in the region and beyond.

Meanwhile the Government of Pakistan welcomes the announcement by Turkey to convene an extraordinary Islamic Summit next week to discuss this serious issue.
