ISLAMABAD Dec 11 (TNS): Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) has upgraded its science labs at international standard in order to facilitate the students to do research work that helps to address socio-economic issues of the society.
New technology has been imported from Germany and some other developed countries to meet latest research’s needs, this was stated by the Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Shahid Siddiqui while speaking at a training workshop held to understand new trends in the field of material sciences.
The workshop was participated by the researchers from twenty national institutions. It was aimed at updating them about the new technology for evaluating and using relevant equipment.

The event, organized by the University’s department of Physics and it was part of their ongoing activities to introduce new developments in various disciplines of Physics and to promote research culture in the country.
Dr. Shahid Siddiqui said that it was imperative to bridge the knowledge-gap in various academic fields to come at the par with the developed nations. The University, during the last three-years focused on updating its students and Faculty about new techniques and methods for conducting research that brings benefits to the society.
A special financial incentives package was offered to the Faulty to construct and create knowledge through research journals. They have achieved a milestone in the field of research. Fourteen research journals were published in a short span time. These numbers will reach to twenty by June next year, he announced.
In order to disseminate the research-findings twenty-seven national and international conferences were arranged, besides holding more than 100 seminars and workshops during the last three years.
He briefed the participants about the recent initiatives to bring about qualitative improvement in the overall working of the University. They tried to reach out to marginalized sections of the people, helping them to get educational facilities free of cost. These include prisoners, disabled, drop-out girls and transgender group.
Earlier, chairman department of Physics, Dr. Zafar Ilyas highlighted the objectives of the workshop, stating it is unique one in its nature, since it providing necessary know-how to the researchers about XRD, FT-IR and LUMOS FT-IR microscope.
