Islamabad, Jan. 1 (TNS): Opposition leader in the Senate Aitzaz Ahsan sees an escalating rift between former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his younger brother, Shehbaz, claiming that the elder Sharif has dashed to Saudi Arabia to impede the political rise of Punjab Chief Minister.
However, Ahsan, a senior Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader, claimed Nawaz had not been called to Saudi Arabia, in fact, he left in panic after his brother Shehbaz’s announcements of meeting leaders there.
“The Sharif brothers are in disagreement on issues. Shehbaz Sharif says he should be made the next prime minister, but the votes are with Nawaz and Maryam, and not with Shehbaz,” Ahsan said.
“Shehbaz is trying very hard to become the next prime minister,” he added. “But it is important now to know what the Sharif brothers are doing in Saudi Arabia. Shehbaz Sharif left in Raheel Sharif’s plane to show that he is on the side of the army and the judiciary. Nawaz went by a commercial flight.”
Both the Sharifs are in Saudi Arabia. Their departure has created enough rumours at home. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders have repeatedly said that the senior party leadership is holding talks with Saudi officials.
