SAWAT, Jan 03 (TNS): At least 11 security personnel, including an officer, were martyred in Swat’s tehsil Kabal on Saturday evening when a suicide attacker targeted an Army unit, military media wing ISPR said.
Those martyred include seven personnel who were critically injured in the attack. The attack on the Army unit also injured 13 other security personnel.
According to ISPR statement suicide attacker target the army unit sports area near Sharifabad of Tehsil Kabal, Swat that initially martyred three security men and wounded ten others, but seven of them succumbed later on due to the severity of wounds.
The security forces and law enforcement agencies started search operation after cordoned off the area.
The curfew has been imposed in Tehsil Kabal.
Initial reports suggested that the bomber blew himself up in a ground where soldiers were playing volleyball.
According to some sources, as many as 16 people were injured in the blast. All the injured were shifted to Combined Military Hospital Saidu Sharif.
Although peace had returned to Swat after a military operation in the valley in 2009, security has been a primary concern in the region. Police and armed forces personnel jointly man several checkpoints. There are approximately 6,000 policemen in Swat and most of them are deployed on checkpoints.
A few days ago, the Swat police claimed to have arrested two militants, in the same area, allegedly involved in anti-state activities during spillover of militancy to the Swat valley.
