Karachi, Feb 24 (TNS):  In a major breakthrough in the Naqeebullah murder case, Karachi police on Saturday arrested a key facilitator who had helped former Station House Officer Shoaib Sheikh aka “Shoaib Shooter” to flee Karachi.

On a tip-off, the police conducted a raid in Janjal Goth and arrested Aurangzeb Khan, who had allegedly helped Shooter, one of the absconding police officials in Naqeebullah’s murder in a fake encounter, to escape the city and flee to Lahore.

An FIR had been registered against Aurangzeb at the Gulshan-e-Maymar Police Station for helping the former SHO in escaping. ASI Ehsanullah Marwat, the brother of SHO Shah Latif Town Amanullah Marwat, had also been nominated in the FIR for providing shelter to Shooter.

Former Malir SSP Rao Anwar, who has gone into hiding after the fake encounter, along with other police officials had staged the shooting, killing several people including Naqeebullah who were in police custody. The killing in Karachi sparked outrage across the country and Supreme Court took suo moto notice of the incidents while people took to the streets, demanding the arrest of the police officials including Anwar for killing innocent people. Anwar, who had been accused of killing over 400 people in fake encounters, failed to appear in the Supreme Court in the last two hearing despite the fact that the chief justice had accepted his ‘letter’ appealing to provide him protection when he appeared before the court. When Anwar failed to show up at the last hearing, Chief Justice Saqib Nisar ordered the Sindh police and intelligence agencies to arrest the absconding police officer and present him before the court.

It has become a mystery whether Anwar is hiding in the country or he has escaped to a foreign country after he was stopped at the Islamabad airport soon after his name was placed under an investigation by the Sindh police chief.

Intelligence agencies and police have failed to trace the absconding police officer and he is rumoured to be protected by some elements in the country.
