Islamabad March 6 (TNS): The outgoing Senate Chairman Raza Rabban said on Tuesday that conspiracies were still afoot to pack up democracy and roll back the 18th constitutional amendment under which powers and resources have been devolved to provinces.

Speaking at a luncheon arranged for the outgoing senators here, Rabbani said that his position had constrained him from spilling the beans about the forces and conspirators which, in the past, attempted to pack up the democratic system by creating stability in the country. The outgoing Senate chairman hinted at making some startling revelations once he retired from the Senate chairman slot.

At the same time, he said that the country was passing through a critical juncture and it was a transitional period for the country and democracy.

He said that in the recent past, attempts were made to bring a counter-revolution in the country by backing undemocratic elements. Rabbani said that efforts must be made to promote democracy and federalism and undemocratic forces should be confronted head-on to save the country from falling into the hands of dictatorial forces.

He said that they wrested out democracy from a dictator and they know how to protect democracy. He said that their efforts to save and protect democracy and the Constitution will continue in the future. He said that Allah has to protect Pakistan and it must flourish under a democratic dispensation.
