Islamabad March 20 (TNS): An inquiry into the misappropriation of billions of funds in the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) has been put in the cold storage after a top official allegedly influenced the probe, TNS has learnt.
BISP chairperson Marvi Memon had formed a four-member team headed by Director-General admin Shamim Gul Durrani to probe the alleged misappropriation of over Rs2 billion by the BISP officials through fraudulent means and submit a report within two-month. The probe team was also tasked to identify and scrutinize bogus entries as BISP beneficiaries.

According to reports, the BISP officials kept a fictitious data of over 12,000 people as beneficiaries and transferred funds worth over Rs2 billion on their accounts. Around 70 BISP officials were allegedly involved in the scam.
Sources told the TNS that though the team has completed its inquiry into the misappropriation and a report has been finalised, BISP Secretary Umar Hamid Khan was allegedly influencing the probe committee not to submit the final report to the BISP chief.
According to the sources, the BISP chief and the secretary have long been locking the horns and it was also taking a toll on the overall performance of the employees.
International donors have already raised objections over the ‘questioning affairs’ of the BISP and the delay in making the report public will put another question mark on its fairness in doling out cash and funds to the people
