Karachi March 22 (TNS): Karachi police on Thursday got 30-day physical remand of former Malir SSP Rao Anwar after he was presented before an anti-terrorism court amidst unprecedented security.
Anwar — who surrendered to the Supreme Court on Wednesday after he eluded arrest for over two months and later flown to Karachi for further investigation by a joint investigation team led by Sindh AIG Aftab Pathan — is accused of killing Naqeebullah Mehsood and three others in a fake encounter on the outskirts of Karachi on January 13.
Rao Anwar was brought to the court from Malir Cantt police station amid tight security.
Earlier, an unusual scene was witnessed in the Anti-Terrorism Court on Thursday when the investigation team led by SP Abid Qaimkhani appeared before the judge without Rao Anwar.
The episode baffled the judge, who asked the investigation officer to produce the arrested police officer today at any costs and halted the proceeding for a few hours.

When the investigation officer pleaded that Anwar will be presented at the next hearing, the judge expressed his annoyance and told him to produce the former SSP Malir today.
Critics say that certain vested interests were creating bottlenecks in the fair trial of the Naqeebullah Mehsood and they were bent on saving Anwar and their own skin by trying to influence the JIT that has been formed by the Supreme Court to grill Rao Anwar in the fake murder case.

The chief justice has already rejected the plea of two intelligence agencies to include their men in the JIT.
The investigation team also produced suspended DSP Qamar Ahmed and nine other suspects in the fake murder case.
