Lahore bakery fire claims five lives

Lahore April 3 (TNS): A devastating fire killed five people after it engulfed a bakery in Barkat Market in Lahore on Tuesday morning, police and rescue sources said.

The cause of the fire could not be ascertained immediately.

The five employees of the bakery remained trapped inside the bakery after the fire engulfed the top floor of the eight-storey building and they died of suffocation. The bodies and the injured were rushed to Jinnah Hospital.

Police said that no emergency alarms or fire safety gadgets had been installed in the building

The four victims were identified as Shahbaz, Shahid, Talib and Shakeel while the fifth could not be identified immediately.

The police took the building owner Aleem Khan into custody.

Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has sought a report on the incident. He also expressed his sorrow with the families of the victims

Meanwhile, rescue officials said that the fire was brought under control after a struggle of over one hour.
