Taxila, April 28 (TNS): On the eve of birth anniversary celebrations of Siddhārtha Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism religion Remnants of Buddha in Taxila were handed over to Sri Lankan authorities on Saturday.
According to the agreement, the relics will be kept in Sri Lanka till May 5th during the annual celebrations which mark the birth of Siddhartha Gautama Buddha known as Vesakh Mela.
Literary Heritage Abdul Majeed Niazi and Joint Secretary National History represented the Government of Pakistan and handed over the relics to Jayanath C.P. Lokuketagodage Sri Lankan high commissioner in Pakistan after signing an agreement to this effect.
Speaking on the occasion, the Sri Lankan high commissioner acknowledged the Pakistani Government for this act of brotherhood and friendship.
After reaching Sri Lanka the High Commissioner said that the remnants will be received by the Sri Lankan Prime Minister.
Commissioner Jayanath also said that Vesakh Mela has become an inspiring chapter and a catalyst of strengthening the relationship of friendship between the two countries.
