Dhaka, May 2 (TNS): Awami League Publicity and Publications Secretary, Hasan Mahmud, claimed BNP acting chairperson, Tarique Rahman, is a Pakistani national by birth.

“Tarique Rahman is not Bangladeshi. He has handed over his Bangladeshi passport. He was born in Pakistan and by birth he is a citizen of Pakistan,” he said at a press conference at the Awami League president’s Dhanmondi office on Wednesday.

Recently State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Shahriar Alam, said Tarique Rahman, who has been in the UK for years, submitted his Bangladeshi passport to the High Commission in London. However, BNP rejected the claim.

At the press conference, Awami League Joint General Secretary, Jahangir Kabir Nanak, said BNP founder Ziaur Rahman, his son Tarique Rahman, and Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ersad destroyed Bangladesh’s election system and democracy, while Awami League President, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, ensured democracy and voting rights for all.

He also said Awami League’s candidate, Jahangir Alam, will win the Gazipur city polls with a huge margin.

“Since BNP knows they will never win in Gazipur they are trying to spread propaganda by saying that the polls will not be free and fair under the Election Commission,” Nanak said.

Nanak also said there is no internal conflict among Gazipur leaders.

Among others, Awami League Office Secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap, Organizing Secretary Ahmed Hossain, Education Secretary Shamsunnahar Chanpa, and Deputy Office Secretary Biplob Barua, were present at the press conference.
