Manchester May, 10 (TNS): Wayne Rooney is set to play in America after agreeing in principle to join DC United, Sky Sports News reported.

Former England and Manchester United captain will move to Washington DC if he signs the deal.

It is unclear at this stage if his wife Coleen and their three children will also shift to the US capital.

Rooney’s salary has not been confirmed but it is understood he will be the highest player at the club, with the deal set to keep him there until the end of the 2020 season.

The MLS 2018 season started in March and draws to a close in October. Rooney’s proposed move will reportedly be confirmed on July 10, when the MLS mid-season transfer window opens.

A number of MLS franchises held talks with Rooney’s agent Paul Stretford more than a year ago before the forward had agreed to rejoin Everton for the 2017/18 Premier League season.

DC sit at the bottom of the MLS table with just one win in their last seven games.

The club’s chief executive Jason Levein hopes Rooney will be the club’s marquee signing if he makes the move on July 14.

Rooney is England’s all-time top goalscorer, having netted 53 goals for the club in 119 games.

The 32-year-old began his senior club career at Everton before joining Manchester United in 2004.

He went onto score 183 goals for the side and won five Premier League titles, one FA cup, and a Champions League crown.
