Michael Carrick switches to coaching at Man Utd straight after retirement

Manchester, May 15 (TNS): Manchester United’s long-serving midfielder Michael Carrick has switched role from the playing squad to the coaching staff on Tuesday after he decided to hang his boots on the final game of the Premier League season against Watford.

England’s former midfielder will now be a part of Manchester United’s coaching staff along with Jose Mourinho and his first assignment will be an FA Cup Final against Chelsea on Saturday.

The midfielder has served United for 12 years in which he made 464 appearances, won 5 premier league titles and a Champions League in 2008.

The 36-year-old midfielder said, “A couple of years ago I thought maybe it would be a good thing to spend time with the family, but then it’s about timing and opportunities” He added, “I am not training this week. I am going to jump on the coaching staff.”

Speaking on working with United manager Jose Mourinho, “ He is one of the best, he’s been around for many years and it all fits in. I’ve been at this club, and it is such a great club, so I obviously know the club and the manager.”

Carrick also said that he intends to pursue management one day, but for now, these are the first steps in his coaching journey.
