Kazan, June 28 (TNS): The South Koreans stunned the world on Wednesday after they sealed a historic 2-0 win over defending world champions Germany who crashed out of the world cup, as they were shocked in Kazan Arena.

The game was cagey and unpredictable as both sides played end to end football throughout the 90 minutes.

Germany rued many chances from corners and South Korean goalkeeper Cho-Hyun-Woo was in the form of his lives against the Germans and was named Man of the Match after the game.

South Korea scored two goals in stoppage time as South Korean centre back Kim-Young-Gwon bundled the ball into the net following a corner although at first he was adjudged offside but VAR suggested otherwise as the ball deflected the German defender before reaching Kim.

The second goal came due to Manuel Neuer’s decision to come up the line and play as a midfield sweeper which meant the net was without a goalie in it and in a flash the South Koreans made a counter-attack with a through pass to Son Heung-min who raced away and scored in an empty net.

Elsewhere Sweden thrashed Mexico 3-0 and topped the group, which meant that Germany will be the fourth defending champion since 1998 world cup to crash out of the group stage.

Switzerland will now face Sweden in the round of 16, whereas Mexico will take on favourites Brazil in the knockout stages.
