Islamabad July 8 (TNS): The National Accountability Bureau (NAB), which was probing the Nandipur power project scam, on Saturday decided to convert the investigation against former federal law minister Babar Awan into a reference.

According to sources, the decision was taken at a board meeting of the anti-graft body that was held at the NAB headquarters on Saturday.

The Nandipur power project scam surfaced in 2012, when Water and Power Minister Khwaja Asif, whose party was in the opposition in the National Assembly then, had filed a case in the Supreme Court stating that a loss over Rs1 billion was incurred to the national exchequer from the single project.

Asif had said in the petition that the loss was incurred due to the negligence of law ministry.

The NAB board meeting decided to send the reference against Babar Awan, who has recently joined the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, to the accountability for formal proceeding. According to the NAB sources, Babar Awan had caused a loss of Rs1 billion.
