Islamabad, July 12 (TNS): Malala Day is being observed on Thursday across the world for promotion of education.
The United Nations (UN) has designated July 12, which is Yousafzai’s birthday, Malala Day in honor of the young woman who has been a prominent activist for female education since her early teens.
On July 12, 2013, Malala Yousafzai spoke at the UN to call for worldwide access to education. The UN dubbed the event as Malala Day.
Meanwhile, Caretaker Punjab Chief Minister Dr. Hassan Askari has said that Malala Yousafzai lighted the candle of knowledge in the darkness of ignorance and boldly faced the fanatics.
In his message on Malala Day, the Chief Minister said that Malala is an example for Pakistani students and her struggle for the promotion of education and elimination of extremist tendencies are praiseworthy.
He said that Malala Yousafzai is a symbol of bravery and commitment as well as a national pride.
He said that in fact, Malala Yousafzai is the real face of a modern and tolerant Pakistan.
As a young girl, Malala Yousafzai was not allowed to go to school. But She refused to stay home and spoke out for educationand was almost killed for standing up for her beliefs. To this day, Malala continues to work to ensure that every girl around the world has the chance to go to school.
Considering Muhammad Ali Jinnah and Benazir Bhutto as her role models, she was particularly inspired by her father’s thoughts and humanitarian work. On 9 October 2012, while on a bus in the Swat District, after taking an exam, Yousafzai and two other girls were shot by a Taliban gunman in an assassination attempt in retaliation for her activism; the gunman fled the scene.
