Malala strongly condemns attack on 12 schools across Chilas, Diamer districts

Islamabad, August 4 (TNS):Noble Peace Prize winner and Pakistani activist Malala Yousufzai condemned the attack on 12 schools in Chilas and Diamer districts of Gilgit-Baldistan on Saturday.

She tweeted, “The extremists have shown what frightens them most – a girl with a book. We must rebuild these schools immediately, get the students back into their classrooms and show the world that every girl and boy has the right to learn.”

According to reports, Diamer Superintendent Police (SP) Roy Ajmal said 12 schools, including only-girls schools were set on fire. He also said that in a few cases, books were also thrown out and torched.

Police officer Mohammad Bashir said that the attack on schools took place near Chilas late night on Thursday, however, no casualties were reported as the schools were closed at the time of attack.

No terror group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet, the police added.

Witnesses and locals said that explosions were heard in GPS Ronay and Girls School Takya, however, police said that they did not receive reports about blasts.

The commissioner of Diamer district, Syed Abdul Waheed Shah, revealed that explosives were used to wreck two schools and the rest were set on fire.
