Islamabad, Aug. 27 (TNS): The Senate on Monday unanimously passed a resolution against holding a blasphemous cartoon competition by a Dutch party in Netherlands. It said that a formal protest should be lodged with the Dutch government through its embassy in Islamabad.
It recommended convening of a special session of the OIC countries to formally engage EU, UN and individual states to chalk out limits of freedom of expression to maintain global peace, harmony, tolerance, while ensuring freedom of expression within reasonable and lawful limitations dictated by common good of humanity at large.
The resolution asked government to urge UN for global consensus against such blasphemous initiatives by a handful of mischief mongers, whose sole aim seems to create communal discord and social unrest.
It recommended that a committee of Muslim intellectuals and experts should be constituted to deliberate on the issue and frame workable proposals for preventing such blasphemous movies, cartoons, and other such contents.
Speaking on the occasion, Prime Minister Imran Khan said the government will raise this matter at the United Nations forum. He said all the Muslims should wage united efforts and convey their sentiments to the world community that how sensitive they are over this matter.
First of all, Imran Khan maintained a consensus should be reached at the OIC level that Muslims are very sensitive when it comes to their love for the Holy Prophet. He said the world needs to realize that if any interpretation of holocaust is not allowed in the West despite so called freedom of expression, then how insult of Muslims’ prophet can be tolerated in the name of freedom of expression.
