One die, several hurt as fire engulfs a building in Lahore

LAHORE, Sept. 8 (TNS): A man died and several others were seriously injured when a fire erupted in a multi-storey commercial building in the Gulburg neighbourhood of Lahore on Saturday evening.

The fire broke out in the basement of the 15-storey building located on MM Alam Road and quickly spread to other floors, according to  reports.

One man made a desperate attempt to escape the fire but fell off the building. He was rushed to hospital for treatment of his critical wounds where he succumbed to his wounds.

Seven vehicles of the fire department doused the blaze after an hour-long effort, while nearly 50 people were trapped on different floors.

Punjab’s information minister told the media at the site that the fire has been put out. He added that the building belonged to the son-in-law of PML-N chief Shehbaz Sharif.
