Protect rights of society’s  marginalized sections: President

ISLAMABAD, July 21 (TNS): There is need to protect the rights of marginalized segments of the society and for establishing such institutions which may provide them protection and legal aid, said President Mamnoon Hussain on Friday.

He was talking to Justice (R) Ali Nawaz Chowhan, Chairman National Commission for Human Rights (NCHR) who along with Member Sindh, Anis Haroon called on him at the Aiwan-e-Sadr, Islamabad.

President stressed that, “Institutions like NCHR are must for stability and strengthening of the society.” He underlined that, “Our beliefs and the Constitution of Pakistan provide complete protection to basic human rights of all citizens of the state.” He noted that, “Due to prompt measures taken by the government the situation of human rights is better in Pakistan than most countries of the world but added that efforts should continue to further improve the situation.”

He called for effective legislation to discourage incidents of household violence and stressed the need for registering incidents of household violence as criminal cases. The President urged to raise awareness about human rights among the masses through effective print and electronic media campaigns.

Chairman NCHR apprised the President about the steps taken by the Commission to promote and protect human rights in Pakistan and also presented a set of reports to the President.

Meanwhile, the President administered the oath of office to Syed Tahir Shahbaz as Wafaqi Mohtasib (Ombudsman) at an oath taking ceremony held at the Awian-e-Sadr.

The ceremony was attended by senior civil officers, academicians and people from all walks of life. Later, Federal Ombudsman Syed Tahir Shahbaz called on President Mamnoon Hussain. The President congratulated him on his appointment as Federal Ombudsman and wished him well in discharge of his new responsibilities.
