Islamabad, July 27 (TNS): Another incident of negligence by staff of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) surfaced as a mother was allegedly handed over an ailing newborn, who she believes was not her baby.

Shahida, a resident of Rawalpindi, told TNS that she gave birth to a baby boy on October 27 last year at PIMS where staff did not show her the newborn after her delivery.

After five hours, she was told that her baby was dead and they can receive his body from morgue of the hospital.

Shahida’s husband, Ghulam Nabi who is a lawyer by profession, went to take the body.

When Ghulam Nabi introduced himself as a lawyer to PIMS staff, they instantly changed their stance saying that their son is alive and they were informed a wrong information mistakenly.

Later on, the couple was informed that their baby was doing fine in nursery, where they can see him in the morning.

Next morning, Shahida was shown a baby with a wound on his wrist and the baby was not seemed to be a newborn but four to five days older.

Doctors also told her that the baby had undergone an operation.

Unfortunately, the baby given to her died after some time, Shahida said adding that she had doubt that the baby handed over by PIMS staff was not her own.

“As a Muslim we offered baby’s funeral payers and laid him to rest but they were uncertain about the baby”, Shahida told TNS adding that they have requested PIMS administration to inquire into the matter as she suspected that her ultrasound reports were not matching with the baby they had been handed over.

“The weight and height of the baby was according to the ultrasound reports”, she added.

The couple also demanded PIMS administration at least for 4 times to conduct DNA test of dead baby but their request was not entertained.

After their frequent requests, PIMS administration constituted a three-member committee which tempered the record to hide this criminal negligence. According to record provided by PIMS the baby they were given was son of a lady named Shahla.

As a grieved mother, Shahida requests the Supreme Court of Pakistan to take notice and help her to recover the baby.
