Rawalpindi (TNS) In a landmark initiative to promote the right to freedom of religion or belief (FoRB), Weaving People to Grow Foundation (WPTGF) in collaboration with Empower Women Media (EWM hosted a one-day training session titled “Live What You Believe” at Rose Hall, Bakra Mandi, Rawalpindi. The event brought together over 85 women and youth participants to discuss the significance of FoRB and its role in fostering peace, equality, and social harmony in Pakistan. The event was moderated by Mr. Aaron Rowan Bob and Ms. Shereen Naseem from WPTGF.
The training commenced with opening remarks by Ms. Kiran Peter, Executive Director of WPTGF, who emphasized the importance of grassroots awareness and engagement in upholding Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. “True empowerment begins when individuals can freely express their beliefs without fear or discrimination,” Ms. Peter stated. The co-facilitator of the training was Ms. Sophia Garstin who emphasized on respecting other religions and prevention of hate speeches against other religions on social media and in our daily conversations.
The day featured a series of educational film screenings on FoRB, group discussions, and expert-led sessions. Prominent speakers included Mr. Zorob Tehreem, Board Member of WPTGF spoke about the impact of religious tolerance on peace and security and he also explained that on the basis of identity people are excluded and feel insecure. Ms. Zartasha Niazi, Chief Executive Officer of Action for Impact, who highlighted the relevance of FoRB in Pakistan’s social context. She emphasized on mobilization of parents to help understand acceptance of diversity.
One of the key highlights was a session led by Ms. Shugufa Jamal, a seasoned development sector professional, focusing on how religious freedom can empower women. She stressed on promotion of gender equality in institutional decision making. Participants shared real-life examples of challenges and proposed practical solutions to support women of faith. Mr. Zulfiqar Baig stated Pakistan is a home of diverse religions and this diversity gives a beautiful color to the country. He stressed on respecting other religions to make our home country more peaceful and secure.
In the afternoon session, Col. (Retd.) Syed Zafar Uddin Ahmad, CEO of Sigma Motors Ltd., drew connections between religious freedom, economic growth, and innovation. He emphasized on people to become compassionate humans. The spirit of compassion and empathy will make people humans. The training concluded with the presentation of a “Plan of Action,” where participants shared ideas for community engagement and advocacy.
The event wrapped up with a graduation ceremony, distributing certificates to all attendees, followed by closing remarks from M. Zorob, WPTGF Board Member.
