ISLAMABAD (TNS) Decades ago, “Made in China” was associated with mass productions, more working hours, limited profits and designs conceived beyond China’s borders. Now that image is changing, the manufacturing is rapidly transforming into more advanced machines and technology. There was a time when China’s modernization story was seen through its expansive industrial plants producing everyday products for customers around the world. But now a new chapter has been unfolded. Industries have become centers of innovation, advancement of technology are made known to the world.

As China is moving beyond the production and it is a place where new products and technologies are made. This transition from manual factories to technological advancements opens a gateway into China’s modernization era. The industrial journey in China grew rapidly as it became more connected to the global economy. Due to manufacturing, the rate of employment increased, the exports were expanded, the development of roads, ports, railways and factory towns were encouraged. Over the time, manufacturing itself began to evolve. By production of goods on larger scale, Chinese companies gained knowledge, upgraded production and progressively moved towards the technological advancement. The factories became more than a production house as it became a place of experimental learning.

Today, technology is being more embedded into Chinese production. Artificial intelligence and advance machinery is the reason of enhanced designs and production of the products. According to China’s National Bureau of Statistics, the production of robots has increased by 28% in 2025, while integrated circuit production increased by 10.9%. The estimate production of new energy vehicle has reached approximately 16.524 million units. It is an increase of 25.1% comparatively with previous years. These figures expose the swift movement of the China’s manufacturing sectors for the immense production.

Research and education plays an important role in transformation. In 2025, China spent around 3.93 trillion Yuan on research and experimental development equivalent to 2.80% of its GDP. The amount spent on basic research also increased by 11.1% compared to 2024. These kinds of investment create stronger links between academic research and industrial development.

China’s modernization era has begun by the upgradation of technological centers. According to the World Intellectual Property Organization’s 2026 global innovation index, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Guangzhou remained among world’s top innovation hub. Whereas Beijing, Shanghai, Suzhou are also listed as the leading innovation clusters, along with Tokyo, Yokohama and San Jose and San Francisco. As we walk through the current factories in Shenzhen, it reflects the changing nature of China’s economy. A city which was known for its manufacturing has now transformed into technological hubs, entrepreneurship and research. It reflect how industrial cities can develop into broader innovative ecosystems.

Upgradation not only relates to advancement or inventions but it also transcended people’s everyday life. The cities of China has also transformed through urban development. By the end of 2025, the rate of urbanization had reached 67.89% comparatively to 63.89% in 2020. The main reason for this expansion is improvement in transportation, public infrastructure and digital services. Transportation is also one of a visible example. The major cities have been connected through high speed railways, making travel easier and faster. It also supports great economic interaction. Nowadays everything is digitalized and the technologies become a vital part of our daily activities like communication, investments and others.

Another dimension of modernization in China is green development. China’s Statistics states that the production of new energy vehicles reached 12.483 million units marking an 11% increased year on year. The rate of electricity generated from clean energy sources such as hydro powers, nuclear, solar is 41.2% in the first half of 2026. These statistics of technological progress show the development of China.

The connection between all these elements made the China’s modernization journey more interesting. The journey of China which is from factory floor to innovation hub therefore represents a change in its products. It shows a massive transformation in how development can be evolved. From producing more to producing the best, from adopting technology to developing it and from building industries to building whole manufacturing empires where innovation and education both can bloom. This is not the final chapter of development. The next chapter is already written in laboratories, universities, technology parks and the increasingly intelligent factories of tomorrow.
