Need to prevent students from joining terrorist organisations: Ahsan Iqbal

KARACHI Sept 12 (TNS):  Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal on Tuesday also expressed dismay at the trend of educated, university graduates joining terrorist organisations and said the media, government and parents of students need to play their part in addressing the issue.

The minister said he has directed the Higher Education Commission (HEC) to take concrete steps to ensure students do not turn to ideologies promoting terrorism and militancy.

“Youth have access to social media…such groups create sensational, motivation videos to lure youth into doing terrorist activities,” he said.

Iqbal said that the Ansarul Shariah group, which has been found to be involved in the recent spate of terrorism in the city, has been largely contained and the law enforcement agencies will nab the remaining few members soon.

He said that Rangers would continue to play its role till restoration of complete peace in Sindh.

Talking to media after visiting the headquarters of the Pakistan Coast Guards, Ahsan Iqbal said that police had an important role in maintaining law and order situation.

He expressed regret over the controversy over appointment of Inspector General of Police Sindh, saying that Sindh government had assured to resolve the issue over IGP’s appointment.

He hoped that working relationship between IGP and Sindh government would improve.
