Islamabad, Sept. 29 (TNS): After the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), the federal government too has challenged an anti-terrorism court’s verdict in the Benazir Bhutto assassination case.
The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) filed two petitions with the Lahore High Court’s (LHC) ) Rawalpindi Bench, challenging the decision.

In the petitions, Assistant Attorney General Faisal Mehmood Raja wrote that the government was not satisfied with the verdict and demanded that the police officers “responsible” should be awarded capital punishment in the assassination case instead of jail term and a fine.
An anti-terrorism court, on August 30, had acquitted five accused for want of evidence while branding former military ruler Pervez Musharraf a fugitive, and found two police officers guilty of ‘mishandling the crime scene’, making them the only people to have been convicted over the assassination of Benazir in a gun and suicide attack in Rawalpindi on December 27, 2007.
Soon after the verdict, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) co-chairperson Asif Ali Zardari challenged ATC’s decision, demanding capital punishment for all accused, including former military ruler Musharraf.
The ATC had declared the then city police officer (CPO), Saud Aziz, and the then superintendent of police (SP), Khurram Shahzad, as facilitators in the crime and slapped each of them with a 17-year jail term and a fine of Rs10m.
Today was the deadline for the government to challenge the ATC result whereas the hearing on the application will begin on October 2, 2017.
