Cold intensifies as Karachi receives first winter shower with hailstorm

KARACHI Dec 18 (TNS): The metropolis received the first shower of the winter with hailstorm and gusty winds in the wee hours of Monday, causing a significant drop in temperature.

The Met Office predicted that it will continue to rain intermittently throughout the day.

In the wake of the rainfall, more than 200 feeders of K-Electric tripped, disrupting the supply of electricity to many areas.

Among the areas which received showers are Defence, Clifton, North Karachi, Orangi Town, Saeedabad, North Nazimabad, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Nazimabad, Lyari, and Malir, whereas, hailstorm battered Shahrah-e-Faisal and other adjoining areas.

The weather forecasting department said following the rainfall, temperature in the city dropped to 10 degrees Celsius.

It said mainly cold and dry weather is expected in most parts of the country, however light snowfall over the hills as well as rain with thunderstorm is expected in lower Sindh, Makran, Kalat, Malakand divisions, upper FATA and Gilgit-Baltistan.

Continental air is prevailing over most parts of the country and a shallow westerly wave is present along the western parts of country, the Met Office said.

The minimum temperature in Pakistan was recorded -09°C in Kalam, followed by -06°C in Malamjabba and Astore, -05°C Skardu, Dir, Kalat, and Gupis, and -04°C Quetta, Gilgit, Bagrot, and Parachinar.
