Lahore Feb 27 (TNS): The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Central Executive Committee — that put its head together to pick up an interim president for the party after Nawaz Sharif was stripped off the power and declared ineligible by the Supreme Court to lead the party — on Tuesday approved the name of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif for the president of the party for an interim period — for 45 days — when he will be elected as the permanent president of the party by the central council of the party.

According to sources, Shahbaz’s name was proposed by Nawaz while enumerating his services for the party, the province and the country and the central leadership under the chair of Raja Zafarul Haq gave their overwhelming assent and approved his name for the interim president of the party.

Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Raja Zafarul Haq, Ahsan Iqbal, Saad Rafique, Khawaja Asif, Maryam Nawaz, Hamza Shahbaz and other party leaders also attended the meeting.

Earlier addressing the huddle, Nawaz said that he was not only disqualified as the prime minister and the party president but also never allowed to complete his three terms as the chief executive of the country.

The party also reiterated the stance that the party leadership “does not recognize the judges who have taken the oath under the Pervez Musharraf PCO”.

According to sources, the huddle also took exception to the offensive words such as “Godfather and Caecilian Mafia” used by the judges against the party leadership. The leadership, according to the sources, vowed to take a tough stance against the “PCO-judges’ and the partisan judiciary” and the narrative taken by Nawaz “would be taken forward with full vigour ahead of the upcoming general election.
