Islamabad March 16 (TNS): An opposition lawmaker from the Pakistan People’s Party and a disgruntled ruling party member raised the issue of not placing former prime minister and his daughter on the exit control list despite a request made by the National Accountability Bureau.

Speaking on a point of order, PPP’s Naveed Qamar questioned what was the procedure to put someone’s name on the ECL. He asked why the names of the Sharifs had not been placed on the ECL despite the fact that they were facing court proceedings and corruption charges but their names have not been put on the ECL.

He said that persons facing corruption charges and court proceedings end up getting their names put on the ECL and under a double standard has been adopted in this case.

Former interior minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said that during his tenure, even names of such people would be put on the ECL who had family disputes. He said that if a committee on the interior has taken or changed the procedure, the details should be presented in the parliament, otherwise, it should be assumed that the decision on the ECL has been taken somewhere else. He also demanded that the NAB requests should be entertained on merit and implemented.

Nisar also demanded to inform the House why some people were exempted from this penalty and why others suffer.

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal claimed in a statement that no formal request has been made by the NAB seeking to place the Sharifs’ names on the ECL.

He said that if such a summary comes up for consideration, the interior ministry will act according to the law of the land.
