IPL: Iyer Shines in his first game as Skipper, as Delhi thrash Kolkata

Delhi, April 28 (TNS): Newly appointed Delhi Daredevils captain Shreyas Iyer scored blistering innings powered by emphatic strokes as he scored 93 off 40 balls against Kolkata Knight Riders on Friday, to give Delhi only their second victory in 7 Indian Premier League games.

Delhi were sent in to bat after Kolkata opted to bowl. The Delhi Daredevils batsman went all guns blazing in the first innings. Iyer scored a majestic knock along with Prithvi Shaw who made a solid 62 in an enthralling 67 run-partnership for the second wicket.

Iyer was appointed captain two days before misfiring Gautam Gambhir stepped down from captaincy. The 24-year-old Mumbaikar had a stern task of winning at least 7 games from the remaining 8 in the group stage to qualify for the playoffs this season.

In the second innings at the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium, the Knight Riders responded well and fired on all cylinders. KKR kept their most powerful hitter Andre Russell back to utilize him in the last 10 overs.

The West Indian came when the team required 143 off 63 balls. The powerful hitter scored a quick firing 44 to take the game close but wickets soon started falling around him in quick session, and once Delhi got rid of Andre Russell, in the 18th over the game was truly over.
