Atletico Madrid triumphs Marseille to win UEFA Europa League

Lyon, May 17 (TNS): Atletico Madrid thrashed Marseille by 3-0 to clinch the Europa League Final in Lyon for the third time in 9 years, as French star Antoine Griezmann, rose to the occasion with a brace.

Antoine Griezmann who has now netted 30 times for Atletico Madrid was the star of the show as he scored two goals in the 21st and the 49th minute, to give Atletico a 2-0 lead.

The French winger coolly slotted in the first one and scored the second with a sumptuous dink over the keeper to take Marseille out of the game, skipper Gabbi then drilled in a late goal to make it 3-0 on the night.

It was the first time in six years that Atletico won the Europa league, having clinched the trophy in 2010 and 2012 previously.

Griezmann was also named the man of the match and said on the occasion, “I am very happy,”I have been working to experience such a moment for many years. I left home when I was 14 for that. We will celebrate. My family is here.” said Griezmann.

“I don’t know how to describe the finish, perhaps cold-blooded.” He added.

Manager Diego Simeone was banned from the touchline in the final and looked on from the stands as he served a four-game ban after he was sent off in the semifinal against Arsenal.

Atletico has now won 6 trophies under the Spaniard including 1 La Liga title, 2 Europa League, 1 Copa Del Rey, 1 Spanish Super Cup, Uefa Super Cup and have been runners-up twice in the prestigious competition of the champions league.
