QUETTA, June 8 (TNS): The third case of polio was confirmed in Balochistan’s District Dakki on Friday, local media quoting officials reported.

An 18-month old boy tested positive for poliovirus bringing the total number of polio-related cases to three in the current year. The previous two cases were also reported in District Dakki.

Pakistan is one of only three countries in the world, along with Afghanistan and Nigeria, that suffers from endemic polio, a childhood virus that can cause paralysis or death.

In April, the government had launched a nationwide polio vaccination drive to reach 38.7 million children in order to eradicate the paralysing and potentially deadly virus.
