FIFA World Cup 2018: Switzerland stuns Serbia, courtesy Shaqiri’s solo goal

Moscow, June 23(TNS): In a thrilling match between Switzerland and Serbia on Saturday, Xherdan Shaqiri stepped up to the occasion in the dying minutes of the match as the Swiss stole the points in a 2-1 win against Serbia.

It was the first comeback of the World Cup in 2018, as the Swiss trailed in the first half after Aleksander Mitrovic’s thumping header through Dusan Tadic’s cross gave the Serbian a headstart.

The lead was soon canceled out in the 52nd minute as Granit Xhaka scored an outrageous goal almost 30 yards outside the box, silencing the Serbian fans in Moscow.

The game was edgy and physical between the two sides and it looked certain that it will end in the spoil of the shares before Xherdan Shaqiri’s one-on-one, solo strike gave Switzerland a historic victory keeping them alive in the World Cup.

This was Shaqiri’s 21st goal for his country and probably the most significant one of his career.

Switzerland now have 4 points in Group E, whereas Serbia stands in third place with 3 points, Brazil are on top of  Group E after their enthralling victory against Costa Rica. In fourth place Costa Rica are stranded with no point to their name and have been knocked out of the world cup.
