Abu Dhabi, Sept 25 (TNS): World heaviest woman, Eman Ahmed, who had been undergoing treatment for weight loss, passed away in Abu Dhabi’s Burjeel hospital, medics say here on Monday.
According to an official spokesperson, she had shown improvement in emotional and psychological growth parameters. She passed away on Monday morning at 4.35 am due to complications from the underlying co-morbid conditions.
Eman suffered from kidney dysfunction and heart disease that worsened her condition in the last few days. “She had been under supervision of 20 doctors from different specialties,” a hospital official said.
While Eman Ahmed had been doing extremely well and recovering from depression and mobility distress, doctors treating her said her death was sudden. “She suffered a septic shock that led to severe infection in her body. Yesterday (Sunday) we shifted her to intensive care unit. Her condition worsened in 24 hours and she suffered a multi organ failure,” Dr Nahed Halawa, deputy medical director at Burjeel hospital, told the Indian Express. He added, “We are all in shock. This is so sudden. Eman Ahmed’s sister Shaimaa Selim is coming to terms with the loss. The family is yet to reach Abu Dhabi from Egypt.”
The 36-year-old Egyptian, considered to be the world’s heaviest woman until January this year, was bed-ridden for the last three years. She was initially brought to India for bariatric procedure under the care of Mumbai-based Saifee Hospital.
In May, Eman Ahmed was shifted to Burjeel hospital, Abu Dhabi, to continue her treatment after a dispute erupted between her sister and Saifee hospital over the treatment she was undergoing.
Doctors in Burjeel hospital had hoped to conduct liposuction and abdominoplasty to further cut down the extra fat followed by a series of plastic surgeries to shape the loosen skin around her arms, face and stomach. The surgeries, however, could not be conducted in the last few weeks.
Dr Shamsher Vayalil, chairman of VPS Healthcare, had hoped to keep Eman hospitalised for another year. A correction surgery of hip, knee and joints was also needed.
